Sustainability

At Abbott’s Bakery, our commitment to doing things more sustainably is baked into everything we do. From the way we craft our loaves, to the materials we use, and how we deliver them, we’re continuously looking to reduce our environmental impact.

USING LESS VIRGIN PLASTIC

Bread bags made with 30% Recycled Plastic

We’re proud to take an impactful step towards supporting the circular economy with the introduction of new bread bags linked to 30% recycled plastic, certified through the ISCC mass balance approach.

Now available across our Abbott’s Bakery core, sourdough, and specialty ranges, these new bags support the sourcing of recycled materials repurposing valuable plastic materials — reducing the need for virgin plastic production.

This exciting initiative will remove 78 tonnes of virgin plastic annually from the manufacturing process of Abbott’s Bakery bread bags, as we work towards producing our products in a more responsible and resource-conscious way, one loaf at a time.

International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS Scheme

The production of Abbott’s Bakery bread bags made with 30% recycled plastic are certified by the ISCC PLUS Scheme. The ISCC certification ensures that 30% of the plastic sourced for the production of our bread bags is recycled and allocated via the mass balance approach.

This means our bags are linked to a blend of new virgin materials and materials incorporating recycled plastics. Achieved through advanced chemical recycling technology, the process ensures the recycled material is of equivalent quality to virgin plastic. The proportion of recycled plastic can vary from bread bag to bread bag, so some may contain more while others may contain less. The ISCC certification guarantees that 30% recycled plastic is allocated to the manufacturing process, so the bags are produced using the mass balance approach.

OUR CARDBOARD BREAD TAGS ARE BETTER FOR EVERY AUSSIE

In 2020, we introduced 100% recycled and recyclable bread tags – an innovation that removes 34 million pieces of single use plastic from local waste streams annually, the equivalent of 11.9 tonnes of plastic every year.

You can easily recycle your cardboard tags in kerbside recycling bins by tucking the tag securely inside other paper or cardboard products, such as an envelope or paper bag, giving them the best chance of being recycled into a new product rather than being sent to landfill.
